MOLE-DAS™ Combustion Intelligence System

The MOLE (Monitoring Of Load & Efficiency)-DAS™ Combustion Intelligence System provides autonomous, continuous performance diagnostics for engines and other combustion sources. It measures key exhaust constituents including methane (CH₄), C₃+ hydrocarbons (a measurement for VOC’s), carbon dioxide (CO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), and oxygen (O₂) and translates those readings into mass emission rates and real-time control intelligence.

Through embedded logic and telemetry, MOLE delivers a closed-loop approach to emissions management that enhances combustion stability, extends catalyst life, and improves overall operational efficiency.

A Proactive Approach to Combustion Optimization

Unlike traditional post-stack monitoring solutions, MOLE correlates emissions data with dynamic engine parameters such as load, fuel composition, cylinder temperature distribution, and ignition quality. The system’s onboard logic interprets these variables to drive and maintain thermodynamic optimization (thermodynamic maxima) well upstream of the exhaust stack. These proactive control measures reduce fuel consumption, mitigate catalyst degradation and minimize unplanned maintenance and downtime. Data are communicated via MODBUS (Modicon; Schneider Electric) for seamless integration with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems, enabling operators to visualize combustion health, establish thresholds, and trigger alarms based on custom parameters.

The Science Behind the MOLE System

The theoretical products of methane combustion are CO2 and H2O. By measuring key pollutants and stoichiometric indicators, the MOLE™ enables an engine or other natural gas-fired unit to drive the system’s outputs near theoretical ratios.

Monitors CH₄, C₃+ hydrocarbons, CO₂, CO, NOₓ, and O₂ in real time for complete combustion visibility (not limited to – the MOLE™ can also be equipped with combustion intermediary sensors – hydrogen cyanide (HCN), nitrosyl hydride (reduced to NO), and other hydroxyl radicals).

Integrated logic & control:

Maps emissions behavior to engine load and performance indicators for precision tuning (e.g., spark signal intensity, heat distribution, vibration analyses, etc.).

Operational efficiency:

Reduces fuel usage, extends catalyst service intervals, and improves uptime.

Seamless system integration:

MODBUS-compatible for direct SCADA or DCS (distributed control system) integration.

Conditioned sampling system (portable):

Includes water knockout and filtration for high-integrity measurements in field environments.

Compliance alignment:

Supports adherence to evolving EPA and state-level emissions standards while improving process efficiency. Enables evaluation and performance tuning of un-combusted hydrocarbons in the exhaust stream – ensuring continual compliance demonstration and preparation for federal testing requirements.

PORTABLE (“Mini-MOLE”) SYSTEM

Mini MOLE-DASE System Case - Open/Closed

Our portable “Mini-MOLE” configuration is a self-contained, field-deployable system that enables diagnostic-grade sampling at the stack and can be used for spot checking engines for performance as a pre-check to improve emissions testing outcomes. The Mini-MOLE is also suitable for periodic emissions monitoring and follows the ASTM D6522-00 testing methodology.

Equipped with a conditioned sample path, it allows technicians and emissions specialists to evaluate combustion quality across multiple sites with laboratory-level accuracy.
